WIPP Releases Preliminary Shipping Estimates

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) returned to waste emplacement on January 4, 2017 for the first time since the underground fire and radiological release events in February 2014.

The first waste to be emplaced are the containers that were in the Waste Handling Building when the 2014 events occurred. This activity involves emplacing waste at the equivalent of two shipments per week and is expected to take two-to-three months. By the end of this calendar year, that rate is expected to increase to four shipments per week.

WIPP is expected to be ready to begin receiving shipments from off-site around the beginning of April 2017. Over the next 12 months, 61 shipments are expected to transit Colorado from only one site: Idaho National Laboratory.

This US Dept of Energy website provides extensive details about the situations which occurred that closed the facility. ,It describes the journey to mitigate those situations and to safely reopen the facility after being closed, for 2 years, 11 months, and 1 day.
