(COLORADO) – The first time a kid goes to school, it's always stressful, especially for parents. Will they make friends? How will they learn in a classroom setting? But are you considering the first classroom they learn in: the School Bus? A good majority of kids learn habits on the school bus before they even arrive at school. Whether being loud and bouncing off the walls with friends or being calm and listening to music with headphones on, kids' behavior on the school bus can help lower distractions for the driver and keep them safer on the roads. Colorado troopers are asking for your help in setting a safe standard for kids that will last throughout their school years.
Sitting down with your children to have a conversation about what is acceptable while waiting for the bus, what to do while on the bus, and how to leave the bus safely will give them the necessary tools to be successful.
- Remind your child that when they get to the bus stop, they should wait in a safe area. Stay away from the curbs and the street.
- When the bus arrives, don’t push your way onto the bus and use the handrail if needed.
- Explain how to be a good passenger vs. a distracting passenger while on the bus:
- Remain in your seat
- Keep your hands, feet, and head inside the bus, and
- Keep belongings out of the center aisle, as these can become a safety hazard if the bus needs to brake.
- Never throw items inside the bus.
- Use your “inside voice”.
The driver needs to be able to focus on the road, and being disruptive causes them to take their eyes off the road.
It is vital to ensure your kids understand what is acceptable while entering and exiting the bus. As a pedestrian, they need to focus when entering and exiting the bus. That means removing headphones or listening devices before disembarking. It also means checking that all cars are stopped and looking both ways before crossing the street.
Your Colorado State troopers want every child to be successful this school year and be safe. The next summer break is only 10 months away, so please take the time to sit down with your kids to explain the importance of being a good passenger and pedestrian. If you wouldn’t allow it in your vehicle, don’t let them get away with it on the school bus.
