Nuclear Materials Transportation Permit

Hazardous Materials Carriers are subject to Colorado Public Utility Commission (PUC) registration and insurance requirements.  Safety oversight is the jurisdiction of the Colorado State Patrol.

Colorado statutes require that any person transporting hazardous materials that require placarding to obtain a permit from the Public Utilities Commission.  Motor carriers transporting radioactive waste and materials are required to purchase both a Hazardous Materials permit as well as a Nuclear Materials Permit

Colorado HazMat & Nuclear Permits

Beginning January 1, 2021, Colorado HazMat & Nuclear Permits will be available through CDOTs COOPR website. Currently, these permits are still issued by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission through December 31, 2020. For questions regarding your current HazMat or Nuclear Permit, please contact the Colorado Public Utilities Commission at (303) 894-2000 Option 4. 

***PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A HAZMAT OR NUCLEAR PERMIT IT IS VALID THROUGH THE EXPIRATION DATE LISTED ON YOUR PERMIT. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PURCHASE A NEW PERMIT UNTIL YOUR CURRENT PERMIT EXPIRES***
